Poland Vegan Travel Guide With Popular Vegan Restaurants
Poland will astound you when it comes to vegan food. In contrast to the rest of Eastern Europe, where veganism remains marginal. The number of vegan-friendly and fully vegan restaurants in Poland will astound you. In Warsaw, no neighbourhood is overlooked, and delicious (and reasonably priced) vegan options can be found almost anywhere.
In terms of availability and quality, it rivals some of the most vegan-friendly cities in the United States or Canada. Poland appears to be at the forefront of Europe's vegan movement. Because English is widely spoken, there are no difficulties in being understood. Another surprise is that most people understand what vegan means, even in some of the country's smaller towns.
They will almost always understand the distinction between vegetarian and vegan unless they are of an older generation, in which case you will need to explain. You should not face any criticism, and people will not stare at you strangely because of your diet. So travelling to Poland as a vegan can be a great decision for you. In this article, I'll share a Poland vegan travel guide that will help you travel to Poland as a vegan.
Vegan Food In Poland
Since Polish cuisine is based on meat and animal products, vegan versions of traditional Polish dishes are challenging to find in mainstream restaurants. Concentrate on salads, pickles, sauerkraut, steamed potatoes, fruit soups and compotes.
Even small grocery stores typically stock plant-based milk, tofu, and a wide range of pickles and other probiotic foods. In the winter, market vegetable options are limited, but supermarkets fill in the gaps with imports. Vegans say they are delighted in Poland, so there is a good chance you will be.
Vegetarian Food is Becoming Increasingly Popular in Poland
According to a Polish daily newspaper devoted to business and economic issues, the market for plant-based protein sources increased by 28 percent last year, totalling more than PLN 600 million (EUR 139.9 million).
Although the Polish diet has traditionally been heavy on meat, Puls Biznesu stated that “the future is vegetarian.”
According to the findings of its study, every tenth serving of protein in 2035 will come from alternative plant sources, and 90 percent of the most popular dishes will have vegetarian counterparts. According to BNP Paribas experts, the Polish market for plant-based protein sources is very diverse because it is still relatively young.
According to the same experts, there are two significant factors contributing to the growing popularity of plant products: health and the environment.
According to a Mintel survey, 56 percent of respondents cited health as a reason for increasing their consumption of plant products, while more than 25 percent of Poles stated that they wanted to limit their meat consumption.
Furthermore, 16% of those polled expressed concern for the environment.
According to the newspaper, 34 percent of Poles claimed to use plant-based substitutes, but only 6 percent did so regularly.
According to Magdalena Kowalewska, an analyst at BNP Paribas International Food & Agri Hub, the market will double, plant products will not replace meat.
“Replacements are primarily a consumer curiosity, an attraction, but they are not yet a permanent component of the standard shopping cart,” she explained.
She went on to say that while the vegetarian industry was overgrowing, it was still relatively small.
According to her, the value of this sector in Poland is “about PLN 0.5 billion (EUR 109.9 billion), which corresponds to only 2% of the value of the poultry market itself.”
Vegan Traditional Polish Dishes
Pierogi
Pierogi (dumplings) are the most well-known and, in my opinion, the best vegan dish in Poland. When exploring Polish cuisine, they are an absolute must-try.
These semicircular dumplings come with various savoury or sweet fillings, such as vegetables, beans, mushrooms, or fruits, and can be served boiled or fried. They are trendy and should be available in almost every vegan restaurant. You might also be able to find vegan dumplings in a regular bar, restaurant, or shop (sold either frozen or fresh).
Aside from the filling, you should double-check the dough. Traditional Polish pierogi dough is made of flour and water, with the addition of eggs on occasion. They are sometimes served with non-vegan sauces such as cream, sour cream, greaves (diced and fried animal skin), or butter in non-vegan establishments.
Cabbage and/or sauerkraut (pierogi z kapust), sauerkraut and mushrooms (pierogi z kapust I grzybami), potatoes and onions (pierogi galicyjskie), lentils (pierogi z soczewic), and blueberries are all popular vegan pierogi fillings (pierogi z jagodami). However, there are numerous vegan varieties made with various fruits, vegetables, and beans.
Kluski Śląskie
Kluski ślaskie is another traditional Polish vegan noodle that originated in the Silesia region but is now popular throughout the country. They are yellowish, round, and have a dent in the center.
Placki Ziemniaczane
Placki ziemniaczane (potato pancakes) is another vegan Polish dish. You may have tried them at Ikea, where they are sold frozen and are referred to as “Rosti.” They are also available frozen in Polish stores, but the fresh ones are far superior.
If you buy them in a non-vegan establishment, make sure they don't contain eggs and ask if they come with any sauce, as they can be served alone or with anything from sugar and cream to meat, vegetable, or mushroom sauce.
Gołąbki
Gołąbki (cabbage rolls) were not traditionally vegan, but vegan versions have grown in popularity in Poland. Traditional golabki were cabbage leaves filled with rice and minced meat. They are now frequently stuffed with rice and mushrooms. They are served with tomato sauce.
Locally Grown Produce In Poland
Chain grocery stores are not the only place to buy fruits and vegetables in Poland. Small indoor and outdoor fruit and vegetable markets stocked with a wide variety of fresh produce can be found throughout Poland. They are comparable to (and occasionally surpass) the traditional farmer's market in the United States.
Potatoes, cabbage, beetroots, onions, celeriac, carrots, parsley, peas, and beans are among the vegetables grown in Poland. Apples, plums, pears, currants, and other berries are readily available in the fruit section. Poles also gather a variety of forest goodies, such as wild mushrooms and berries.
Fermented foods are popular in Poland as well. Fermented cucumbers, pickles, and sauerkraut are all common accompaniments to meals. They are readily available in supermarkets, and many Poles prepare them at home. Fermented rye is also used to make wholemeal bread and zurek, a sour soup. Barszcz, a traditional beetroot soup, is made with fermented beetroot juice.

Travel To Bielsko-Biała
Bielsko-Biala, as a relatively large town, and an important administrative and cultural center, is particularly appealing as a base for your next vacation. The proximity of the mountains, some of which are within the town's suburban area, the many green areas, and the well-developed skiing infrastructure all combine to make it a great destination for anyone looking for a break that is both close to nature and close to urban facilities.
Surprisingly, until 1951, Bielsko and Biala were two separate towns, each belonging to a different province: Silesia and Lesser Poland (with the capital in Krakow). Bielsko-Biala, located at the foot of the Beskid Slaski and Beskid Maly Mountains, has an abundance of natural resources. It is located in a region known as the “Green Lungs of Poland.” The upper part of the Wapienica River valley, including the breathtakingly beautiful Luiza's Valley, is one of the most beautiful places.
The numerous trails leading to the most enchanting nooks of the Beskidy Mountains, as well as the opportunity to take a cable car trip to Szyndzielnia (1026 m) at any time of year, are among the most popular attractions. Debowiec, Klimczok, and Magurka all have popular ski lifts during the winter.
Whatever active leisure activity gets you going, you'll find something here to pique your interest. Many horse-riding schools can be found in the Straconka area, while Bielsko-Biala has numerous swimming pools and tennis courts, a kart track, and a sports airfield that offers parachuting and gliding-related sports.
There is also the option of organizing a flight over the city or the mountains. If you prefer a slower pace, there are many exciting sights to see in the town itself. Sulkowski Castle, built in the middle of the 14th century, has an interior gallery where music concerts are held, as does Saint Nicolas Cathedral, which has exquisite stained glass windows, and the Weaver's House, which dates from the 18th century.
With a population of around 175,000 people, Bielsko-Biala is one of the most important centres of the Silesian Voivodship outside of the Katowice conurbation and was once known as the “town of a hundred industries.” Even today, Bielsko-Biala successfully maintains its wool processing and cloth production traditions.

Travel To Gdańsk
Gdańsk, like a ministate unto itself, has a distinct feel that distinguishes it from other Polish cities. Centuries of maritime ebb and flow as a major Baltic port; streets of distinctively un-Polish architecture influenced by a united nation of wealthy merchants who shaped the city's past; the toing and froing of Danzig/Gdańsk between Teutonic Prussia and Slavic Poland; and the devastation wrought by WWII have all left a special atmosphere that has made Gdańsk an increasingly popular destination.
Visitors are flocking in record numbers to wander historical thoroughfares lined with grand, elegantly proportioned buildings, as well as to enjoy a treasure trove of characterful bars and cafes, seafood restaurants, amber shops, and intriguing museums, not to mention pleasure-boat cruises along the river and a wealth of maritime history to soak up in between brews at dockside beer gardens.

When visiting the vibrant maritime town of Gdynia, it's difficult to believe that it was once a tiny village. This important port and business center is now teeming with activity. Gdynia can be an excellent destination for anyone looking to relax while still enjoying the benefits of a vibrant urban area with many entertainment options, excellent clubs and restaurants.
Gdynia is one of Poland's newest cities, evidenced by its appearance and atmosphere. Due to its maritime location and long sandy beaches, its bustling center and harbour are primarily visited in the summer. It serves as one of Poland's significant seaports and shipbuilding centers throughout the year.
Apart from the shipyard, Gdynia is a thriving business center and the most prosperous city in Poland. Its proximity to two other towns, Gdansk and Sopot, which form an urban agglomeration, aids in the development of the commercial activity. In terms of sightseeing, Gdynia is especially appealing to 1920s and 1930s architecture fans, as there is little older there.
The city's main attractions are two ship museums, the frigate Dar Pomorza (The Gift of Pomerania) and the destroyer Blyskawica (The Lightning).
The Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium help visitors learn more about the sea.
To unwind, head to the nearby Kepa Redlowska natural reserve or the lovely surroundings of Orlowo. Gdynia has a vibrant nightlife and excellent restaurants. Furthermore, the Polish Feature Film Festival and Summer Jazz Days are held in the city.

Travel To Katowice
Katowice (kah-to-vee-tseh) is the largest city in the Upper Silesian Urban Area, a sprawling conurbation with a population of nearly three million people. Built on coal wealth, the once-sleepy rural village exploded into a modern industrial city in the nineteenth century.
While Katowice is a product of the nineteenth-century industrial boom, it did not become a city until the interwar period. After WWII, it was renamed Stalinogród after WW-II, at the height of the Stalinist cult craze but reverted to its original name soon after Old Whiskers died in 1953. Katowice, a major commercial and cultural center, isn't beautiful, but its museums, restaurants, and urban buzz are more than enough to justify a visit.

Travel To Kraków
Kraków is much more than the sum of its parts, and it is one of those cities that requires some exploration before its authentic charm is revealed. Although Warsaw is Poland's political capital, many consider this southern city to be the country's actual cultural capital.
When you first walk into the medieval Main Market Square, a smile spreads across your face as you realize you'll spend a significant amount of time here. Along the perimeter and in the surrounding areas, lively restaurants, shops, cafes, and bars are located.
The best way to get around Kraków is to divide the city into three sections. The Main Market Square is located in the heart of Old Town (Stare Miasto), located in the heart of Kraków.
The majority of the major tourist attractions are concentrated near the Old Town and just south of Kazimierz. Further afield, special excursions include the “Wieliczka” Salt Mine and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.

Travel To Poznań
Stroll into Poznań's Old Town square on any evening, and you'll be instantly introduced to Wielkopolska's capital's distinct energy. The city center is alive at all hours of the day and night, with people flocking to its numerous restaurants, pubs, and clubs. The city's large student population, combined with international business travellers attending its numerous trade fairs, has created a distinct vibe unrelated to tourism.
In addition to its lively personality, Pozna offers many historical attractions – after all, it is the 1000-year-old birthplace of the Polish nation – and its excellent transportation links make it an ideal base from which to explore the quieter surrounding countryside.

Travel To Rzeszów
Rzeszow, in southern Poland, has long been a trade center due to its location on both a significant east/west trading route and a north/south trading route. However, it has been vulnerable to attacks from groups seeking to control this hub because of its location. The city was destroyed three times in the fifteenth century alone!
During World War II, the city played an essential role in the resistance against Nazi occupiers, which was made possible by the Nazi extermination camp established there. Why should people come to Rzeszow now? Because a place where old and new meet can teach you a lot. One of the most beautiful aspects of Rzeszow is the architecture of the city's various buildings.
Many of the city's current structures were built in the 16th century and reflected the Gothic influences of the time. Though many of the buildings have had to be rebuilt or restored in some way due to the city's various conflicts, a beautiful day calls for a cup of coffee in hand and a stroll through the streets of Rzeszow. It truly is a one-of-a-kind architectural collection that is rarely seen anywhere today.

Travel To Szczecin
The western port city of Szczecin (shcheh-cheen) is a lively city awash with students and a clutter of architecture inherited from wildly different ages, well off any path non-German tourists tread. Crumbly German-era art-nouveau tenements and mansions, some of which are renovated, evoke a bygone era, but the historical style is patchy.
Authorities appear to have abandoned the idea of rebuilding, preferring to fill the gaps in the city center with glass-and-steel malls, sacrificing entire streets for retail.
Many of the major thoroughfares have been beautified, but derelict buildings and overgrown plots are common in the city's core. It's a busy working port, but you'd never know it wandering around the city center, with just enough traffic to warrant a stopover between Berlin and Gdańsk, both of which have good connections.

Travel To Warszawa
Although Kraków is known as Poland's cultural capital, the country's official capital, Warsaw, is equally appealing to culture seekers. After all, this is the city where famous people like Marie Curie and Frédéric Chopin were raised. You can explore the historic Old Town neighbourhood after spending the day at a music festival or the Copernicus Science Centre.
Alternatively, visit museums such as the Warsaw Uprising Museum and the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews to learn about Warsaw's rich (and often dark) history.
Whatever your plans are for the day, you can cap it off with locally crafted vodkas or hearty traditional fare (think: meat and potatoes) at one of the city's restaurants, bar mleczny (government-subsidized eateries), or street vendors.

Travel To Wrocław
It's easy to see why everyone adores Wroclaw (vrots-wahf). The venerable city's idyllic location on the Odra River includes 12 islands, 130 bridges, and verdant riverside parks. Cathedral Island, which has been beautifully preserved, is a must-see for fans of Gothic architecture.
Though it is a more manageable version of Kraków, with all of the cultural and entertainment offerings found in that popular destination, the capital of Lower Silesia has its own distinct personality.
With influences from Bohemia, Austria, and Prussia, the city has a distinct architectural and cultural make-up, as symbolized by its magnificent market square (Rynek).
But Wroclaw is more than just a pretty face; it is Poland's fourth-largest city and the region's major industrial, commercial, and educational center. At the same time, it is a vibrant cultural hub, with several theatres, major festivals, a thriving nightlife, and a student population of over 130,000.
