Vegan Hearts Of Palm Calamari With Nori Seaweed

2. Vegan Hearts Of Palm Calamari With Nori Seaweed

I tell you, it's a revelation to be able to eat calamari after making the switch to a plant-based diet!

This vegan version of calamari with palm hearts is just as good as the one with octopus. It has a similar texture, soft but firm. Try them out; they're delicious.

Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes | Total time: 35  minutes | Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Nori seaweed: ½ sheet or nori flakes: 1 tablespoon (optional)
  • Hearts of palm: 2- 14-oz cans (800g), drained
  • All-purpose flour: ½ cup (65 g), gluten-free if needed
  • Garlic powder: ½ teaspoon
  • Salt: ½ teaspoon
  • Black pepper: ¼ teaspoon freshly ground
  • Oil for frying
  • Lemon: 1, cut into wedges (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a strong blender, mix the nori sheet until it becomes nori flakes. You can either use store-bought nori flakes or finely chop the nori sheet using a knife. Remove from the equation.
  2. Cut the palm hearts into ½ inches (1 cm) with the rings separated. Set aside.
  3. Combine the nori flakes, flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a big zip lock bag. Although you could combine them in a dish, the bag approach is more practical.
  4. Mix in the hearts of the palm and give it a good shake to coat everything in the seasoned flour. Remove any excess flour from the rings by sifting them. You can also use a shaker to get rid of the excess.
  5. ¼ inch (about ½ cm) of oil should cover the bottom of a skillet. When the oil is hot, drop the rings and cook for 2 minutes over high heat, rotating them until they're gently brown. You might want to fry the vegan calamari in 2 or 3 batches to keep your skillet from becoming too crowded.
  6. Drain the heart of palm calamari in a colander and serve right away with lemon wedges, vegan aioli, marinara sauce, or vegan mayonnaise.
  7. Store leftover vegan calamari for 3-5 days in an airtight container.

Recipe Notes

  • The nori flakes are optional, but they will give your hearts of palm a calamari-like flavour.
  • If necessary, use gluten-free flour.
  • Any oil will suffice.
  • You may use any spices or herbs you like.

  4. Add the hearts of the palm and shake around to ensure they are all evenly coated. Shake off any excess flour seasoning on the calamari rings.
  5. Cover the bottom of a frying pan with about ¼ inch of oil (about ½ cm). When the oil is hot, add the heart of palm rings to the hot oil and fry them for about 2 minutes over high heat, turning the pieces until they're lightly golden all over. Crispy Vegan Calamari With A Tartar Dipping Sauce

6. Crispy Vegan Calamari With A Tartar Dipping Sauce

This plant-based calamari recipe is flavoured and served with a homemade tartar sauce. This entire recipe is vegan and only takes 20 minutes to make.

Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Total time: 20 minutes | Servings: 2 people

 Ingredients For The Vegan Calamari

  • Palm hearts: 1- 410g can (220g drained)
  • Cornstarch: 3 tablespoons
  • All-purpose flour: ½ cup
  • Garlic powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Nori flakes (Seaweed): ½ teaspoon extra for topping
  • Adobo: ½ teaspoon (check the notes)
  • Water: 3 tablespoons
  • Avocado oil for frying: ⅓ cup

Ingredients For The Tartar Sauce

  • Vegan mayonnaise: 100 g
  • Chopped capers: 1 tablespoon
  • Chopped pickles: ½ tablespoon
  • Lemon Juice: 1 teaspoon, freshly squeezed
  • Chopped dill: 1 teaspoon

Method For The Tartar Sauce

  1. Make the vegan tartar sauce first to let the flavours thoroughly combine.
  2. Mix the vegan mayonnaise, capers, pickles, lemon juice, and dill until thoroughly combined. No salt is needed.

Method For The Vegan Palm Heart Calamari

  1. Rinse the hearts of the palm and cut them into 1-2cm rounds. Then, carefully push out the middle. You'll get rounds that look very similar to calamari rings. Set aside.
  2. Mix the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, adobo, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Set it aside.
  3. Mix the cornstarch, the water, and the nori flakes in a second bowl. Set it aside. Note: Cornstarch might settle at the bottom after some time. Just remix it.
  4. Heat the avocado oil in a skillet to medium-high heat. To test the oil's readiness, sprinkle some flour into it.
  5. Add the “calamari rings” to the cornstarch and flour mixture. Then add to the frying pan. Check notes.
  6. Fry them until crispy, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove the vegan calamari from the oil and place them on a paper towel to remove the excess oil.
  7. Sprinkle the calamari with nori flakes and a pinch of salt. Serve with a tartar sauce.
  8. Enjoy!!!

 Recipe Notes

  • Dip the “calamari rings” into the cornstarch and the flour mixture, then add them straight into the oil. If you need to fry them in two batches, coat the calamari. DO NOT coat the vegan calamari, then let them sit aside. The calamari will not be crispy if you leave them coated too long before you fry them.
  • There is no meat in the calamari. Therefore, we fry the hearts of the palm until the “calamari rings” are crispy. Do not cook for more than 4 minutes.

Hearts of Palm Calamari, Cocktail Sauce and Lemon-Caper Aioli

8. Hearts of Palm Calamari With Cocktail Sauce and Lemon-Caper Aioli

This delicious vegan hearts of palm calamari recipe is healthy and vegan. You can serve it with a vegan cocktail sauce and a lemon-caper aioli.

Ingredients for Batter

  • Cashew cream: 1 cup
  • Nori flakes: 1 tablespoon, toasted and finely ground
  • Black pepper: ½ teaspoon, freshly ground
  • Filtered water: 2 tablespoons
  • Kosher salt: ¼ teaspoon

Ingredients for Hearts of Palm Calamari

  • Hearts of palm: 2- 14-oz cans (12), drained and rinsed
  • Yellow cornmeal or polenta: 1 cup finely ground
  • Rice flour: 1 cup
  • Old Bay seasoning: 1 tablespoon, plus more to taste
  • Kosher salt: 1⁄2 teaspoon, plus more to taste
  • Black pepper: 1⁄4 teaspoon, freshly ground, plus more to taste
  • Expeller-pressed canola oil for frying

Method

  1.  To prepare the batter for the calamari, put the cashew cream in a bowl and add the water, ground nori, salt, and pepper. Site the batter to combine; it should be smooth and not gloppy. Set it aside at room temperature to let the flavours melt while you prepare the hearts of the palm.
  2. Using a knife, carefully cut each hollow spear into four 1-inch wide rings.
  3. Add the hearts of the palms to your cashew cream batter, gently turning the pieces over with your hands until thoroughly coated. Set them aside.
  4. Add the cornmeal to a food processor and pulse it into a fine powder. Transfer it to a large glass bowl, add the rice flour, Old Bay seasoning, salt and black pepper, and toss to distribute the ingredients evenly.
  5. You can use a slotted spoon and work in batches. Remove the hearts of palm calamari from the batter and let the excess batter drip back into the mixing bowl. Then add the cornmeal mixture and toss with your hands until the vegan calamari has an even coverage. Shake off any excess cornmeal.
  6. You want to ensure that the cornmeal crust is light and not clumpy. (You can prepare all of this about 2 hours in advance).
  7. Place the breaded hearts of palm in a single layer on a lined baking sheet and refrigerate uncovered. Allow the hearts of palms to warm up to room temperature before frying.
  8. Heat about 2 inches of avocado oil in a frying pan or a cast iron skillet to 325°F. Work in batches by adding the hearts of the palm to the hot oil and frying them. Carefully turn each piece with tongs. Fry them until vegan calamari are crispy and golden brown on all sides (about 2 to 3 minutes).
  9. Remove the cooked vegan calamari pieces from the pan and place them onto a paper towel-lined platter to drain. While still hot, season the hearts lightly with salt, pepper, and a sprinkle of Old Bay seasoning.
  10. Arrange the hearts of the palm on a large platter and serve with cocktail sauce,  a healthy vegan plum sauce, or a vegan honey-mustard dipping sauce.
