Places To Visit

Sites To Visit In Denmark

1. Christiania

Christiania is a self-described autonomous district of Copenhagen, Denmark, great for its counterculture and alternative way of life. Visitors who are drawn to alternative lifestyles, music, and the arts frequently visit this place. It's a great place to find vegan meal options.

Here are some tips for visiting Christiania as a vegan:

Visit the vegan café and restaurant Morgenstedet, which serves various vegan dishes, including sandwiches, soups, and desserts.

Check out the street food market at Papirøen Street Food, which features several vendors offering vegan options.

Visit the Green Light District, a section of Christiania known for its cannabis trade; some vegan food options, like falafel and pizza, are vegan-friendly.

Bring your food if you need more clarification about the options available; as it's a self-governed area, the options may be limited.

Be mindful of the community's rules and regulations, as Christiania is an autonomous neighbourhood that operates under its traditions and customs. Photography is prohibited in certain areas, and smoking cannabis is only permitted in designated areas.

Remember that Christiania is a residential area, and visitors should respect the community's privacy.

Christiania is a great spot to visit if you're interested in alternative lifestyles and counterculture, and it's also vegan-friendly.

2. Assistens Kirkegård

This is a great area to stroll in the sun or bring your picnic basket as the Danes do. Although it is a cemetery, it appears to be handled as a park, and I say, why not? It's a great green spot, so I'm delighted it's being utilized, and I have the opportunity to do so.

3. Frederikberg Have

The grounds encircling Frederikberg slot, or castle as we'd say in simple English, are a wonderful park. It's a terrific area to soak up the sun like a Dane with a picnic blanket (and perhaps even a lunch) or go for a winter walk.

4. Rundetaarn

This city-center tower includes a winding walkway that leads to the top, where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the city and the resundsbron.

5. Nyhavn

Nyhavn is a 17th-century waterfront, canal and entertainment district in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark.

It's a popular destination for visitors and offers a variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars. Here are some tips for visiting Nyhavn as a vegan:

Visit the nearby Torvehallerne, a food market with several vendors offering vegan options, such as vegan ice cream, falafel, and sandwiches.

Bring your food if you need more clarification about the options available; as it's a touristy area, the options may be limited.

Remember that Nyhavn is a busy area, and it can get crowded during peak tourist season, so it may be a good idea to make a reservation at a restaurant if you plan to visit during peak hours.

Nyhavn is a great spot to visit if you're looking for a vibrant and historic area with various vegan options.

Strolling The Streets

7 Tips For Travelling As A Vegan In Denmark

1. Researching Vegan-Friendly Restaurants And Cafés Before Your Trip

One of the best ways to ensure that you have a good vegan dining experience in Denmark is to do some research before you leave.

Many online resources can help you find vegan-friendly restaurants and cafes in different areas of the country.

Some popular websites to check out include HappyCow and TripAdvisor. You can also check out local vegan groups on social media, as they may have recommendations for vegan-friendly places to eat.

2. Bringing Snacks With You As A Backup

While many larger cities in Denmark have vegan-friendly options, it may be more difficult to find vegan-friendly meals in more rural areas or when travelling by train or bus.

To ensure that you stay healthy, it's a good idea to bring snacks with you as a backup. Some good vegan snack options include energy bars, nuts, and dried fruit.

Asking for the “vegans” (vegan) option: When eating out in Denmark, it's always a good idea to ask for the “vegansk” (vegan) option.

Many restaurants will have a separate vegan menu or be able to modify existing dishes to make them vegan-friendly. If there's no vegan menu or the staff is unfamiliar with veganism, feel free to ask for substitutions or modifications.

3. Trying Traditional Danish Foods As A Vegan

Many traditional Danish foods can be easily adapted to a vegan diet. One example is Rød Pølse (red sausage) which can be made from soy instead of meat.

Another traditional food is Smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches), which can be made with vegan butter and toppings like pickled vegetables, avocado, and hummus.

There are also several traditional Danish dishes like potatoes and vegetables, which can be served as a vegan.

4. Finding Supermarkets That Carry Vegan Products

Many supermarkets in Denmark carry a selection of vegan products. Some popular supermarkets with a good selection of vegan products are Føtex, Irma, and Netto.

These supermarkets have a good selection of plant-based meat alternatives, dairy-free milk, vegan cheese, and other vegan products.

5. Learning Basic Danish Phrases

Learning some basic Danish phrases such as “Jeg er vegan” (I am vegan) and “Er dette veganer?” (Is this vegan?) can make communicating with locals and restaurant staff easier.

This can help to ensure that you can order vegan-friendly dishes and make your dining experience more enjoyable.

Additionally, it will be helpful to learn Danish words related to vegetarianism and veganism to help communicate your dietary restrictions more effectively.

6. Being Prepared For Restaurants That May Not Be Able To Cater To Vegans

Even though Denmark is a relatively progressive country regarding vegan options, it's still possible that you may come across a restaurant that cannot cater to your dietary needs.

Feel free to ask for substitutions or modifications in this case. For example, you could ask for a salad with no cheese or a pasta dish without meat.

7. Letting Your Hotel Know In Advance That You Are Vegan

If you're staying in a hotel, you should inform them that you are vegan. This will allow them to prepare for your arrival and ensure that they have vegan-friendly options available for breakfast and any other meals that may be included with your stay. It will also help to avoid any confusion or disappointment during your stay.
