Italy Vegan Travel Guide With Popular Vegan Restaurants
Italy Vegan Travel Guide With Popular Vegan Restaurants
We hope this Italy Vegan Travel Guide makes it easier for vegans visiting Italy to find plant-based meals worthy of any foodie.
At first glance, Italy is not the best place to visit as a vegan foodie. Should Italians eat cheese-laden pizzas, deep-dish beef lasagnas, and Bolognese spaghetti? Wouldn't a vegan in Italy be unhappy? Fortunately, no and no!
Contrary to popular belief, vegan Italian food is not what it appears to be. This incredible destination, steeped in history and famed for its fabulous food, is a must-see for anyone who follows a plant-based diet. Vegan food is plentiful and delicious in Italy!
Is Italy A Vegan-Friendly Country?
Don't be concerned about eating vegan in Italy. It is one of the most vegan-friendly countries. It is extremely simple for vegans to eat in Italy, not only because of the increasing number of vegan restaurants in the country but also because there are so many delicious vegan options in traditional Italian cuisine.
And I'm not just referring to pizza and pasta dishes. Italian cuisine is much more than that, and vegans can enjoy a variety of regional specialties.
Vegan Accommodation In Italy
First and foremost, choose your lodging wisely. It is also important to spend some time in Italy with real locals.
I also know what it's like to be hosted by someone who doesn't value your food preferences, so I don't recommend Couchsurfing, working away, woofing, or similar activities (unless your host is okay with you being vegan).
So, where should a vegan stay in Italy? I recommend Airbnb, vegan house sitting, or a hotel or hostel that offers a vegan-friendly breakfast, such as the Beehive in Rome.
Housesitting entails looking after someone's pets and home while on vacation in exchange for free lodging.
It's the ideal way to travel for those who want to live in luxury but are on a tight budget. Why is that beneficial to vegans?
You get a kitchen (usually a very nice one) to cook all your delicious vegan favourites in peace. In Italy, Airbnb has a similar benefit for vegans: you can have your kitchen.
Airbnb is about renting out someone's home while you're away on vacation (like Uber, but for houses).
The benefit of Airbnb over housesitting is that you can choose where and when you want to go in Italy.
The disadvantage of Airbnb is that you probably won't be able to afford the kind of luxury housesitting can offer you.

Different Flavours Everywhere In Italy
Yes, classic Italian dishes served on checked tablecloths back home may be piled high with animal products, but in ‘real' Italy, ingredients such as fava beans, dried peppers, eggplants, and – of course – tomatoes are the stars of many dishes.
Traditional vegan food varies by region, highlighting the best local produce. In Tuscany, people are known as mangiafagioli, meaning “bean eaters.”
On a cold day in Bologna, there's nothing like a steaming bowl of faglioli all'uccelletto stew. Handmade gnocchi reigns supreme in Rome.
However, some restaurants will only serve gnocchi on Thursdays, following a decades-long tradition.
Pasta Will Be Served
Pasta can be made with or without eggs, so remember the phrase ‘Ci sono delle uova?': ‘Is it made with eggs?'
If in doubt, choose secca (dry) pasta: frescha (fresh) pasta is typically made with eggs, whereas dry is not.
Most restaurants will happily prepare a piatto di pasta con verdue, or pasta with fresh vegetables, upon request.
Dishes And Snacks For Vegan Italians
1. Vegan Pasta
If there is one vegan Italian dish you can find anywhere and everywhere in the country, it is pasta al pomodoro e basilica!
Or, to put it another way, tomato pasta with basil. You can't go wrong with something this simple, rich, filling, tasty, and cheap.
2. Vegan Pizza
There are many different vegan Pizzas available in Italy. The classic pizza marinara is available anywhere that sells pizzas (not all restaurants do). It's also the cheapest item on the menu and (almost always) contains no animal products.
The base is only salt, water, yeast, and flour, with marinara sauce, dried oregano, basil, and garlic (and possibly a drizzle of olive oil) on top!
3. Spicy Vegan Pasta
Penne all'Arrabbiata is another of my favourite vegan Italian dishes! It's a delicious ‘primo' dish (the Italian equivalent of a first course), but it can easily pass as the main course for vegans and omnivores! It's a rich, tomato-based sauce packed with garlic, parsley, and a healthy dose of chiles.
Arrabbiata means “angry” in Italian. But don't be concerned! The name refers to the “angry” spice in the sauce rather than how you feel after eating it.
4. Italian Vegan Soup
Pasta e fagioli is a rich, filling, and nutritious tomato-based bean stew/soup with celery, oregano, and crushed red peppers (among other yummy ingredients). A heartier plant-based dish will be difficult to find anywhere in Italy.
But be wary! You can't be certain that the pasta e fagioli on the menu is vegan. Cooks occasionally add animal products (depending on where you are in the country), so it's always worth double-checking ahead of time.
5. Vegan Appetizer
It can't be beaten as a vegan starter or small snack. Consider toasted bread rubbed with garlic, drizzled with olive oil, and topped with Italy's legendary pomodori (tomatoes)!
6. Vegan Risotto
In the northern regions of Italy, risotto reigns supreme over pasta. Risotto is not a vegan dish, but it is easily veganized.
This is because non-vegan ingredients, such as butter and Parmesan cheese, are added at the end of the cooking process. Contrary to popular belief, they do not contribute to the creamy texture of risotto.
To make creamy risotto, use good vegetable stock rather than meat stock and cook it at a gentle simmer, stirring constantly to ensure the rice absorbs the liquid evenly and does not stick to the bottom of the pan.
Numerous plant-based foods can be added to risotto, including vegetables, wild mushrooms, and truffles.
Risotto alla Milanese — a local specialty in Milan that is flavoured with saffron, giving it a distinctive yellow hue — is one of the most basic yet most famous risotto dishes.
7. Vegan Snacks
It's widely available in bakeries, making it a useful snack or light lunch on the road. Second, it is cheap.
Third, it's always delectably tasty. You can buy it “as-is” with just a drizzle of olive oil, topped with sliced tomatoes and rosemary, or topped with any other delectable ingredients (expect to pay more for the toppings!).
However, keep in mind that not all focaccia is vegan. Many have animal products on top, and even the plain “no-topping” options contain eggs and butter.
8. Vegan Desserts
It's almost sacrilegious to visit Italy and not try the world-famous gelato! As a result, you'll be pleased to learn that an increasing number of “gelaterias” (AKA Italian ice cream parlours) now offer vegan gelato.
It's simply unmissable—especially when you come across a good-quality establishment—and made from ice and water instead of dairy products.
But be aware that some gelaterias are superior to others. Not every parlour (although many of them do) offers vegan options.
Most of those have a limited selection of flavours compared to their dairy counterparts.
Nonetheless, beggars can't be choosers, and in the world of Italian gelato, something is always preferable to nothing!
9. Vegan Polenta
The polenta was once the staple diet of rural Italian families throughout central and northern Italy, from Emilia Romagna to the Swiss border. This is the northern version of rustic cuisine.
It's a thick porridge made by boiling coarsely ground cornmeal in water, similar to the “grits” eaten in the South.
It can be eaten immediately after cooking as a thick, doughy porridge that serves as a starchy base for a meal instead of rice, bread, or potatoes. It can also be poured into a shallow pan and left to cool and set.
The polenta is then cut into slabs and served plain, grilled, or fried to add flavour. The basic polenta recipe is vegan.
All that is needed is cornmeal, water, salt, and olive oil. Some chefs, however, substitute butter, milk, or meat broth for the water, so be sure to ask.
Purchasing Vegan Groceries In Italy
If you plan to self-cater some of your meals in Italy, NaturaS is a good place to stock up on vegan groceries.
It is a national chain of stores that sells only organic, non-GMO products, such as fresh produce, packaged foods, cosmetics, and personal hygiene items.
Vegan snacks like energy bars and chocolates can be found here, as well as tempeh, seitan, veggie burger patties, and other quick fixes.
iVegan, a fully vegan shop near the Vatican, is also in Rome. Italy also has fantastic produce markets. It's fun to look around, even if you're not looking to buy anything.

1. Travel To Bologna
When you visit Bologna, you'll notice that it has everything cultural and culinary that you think of when visiting northern Italy, except that it's still relatively unknown.
Travel to Bologna is frequently avoided because it is sandwiched between the country's more established and well-traveled cities, Venice, Milan, and Florence.
Nonetheless, it is Italy's seventh-largest city, the historical capital, and the hearty food epicentre of northern Emilia-Romagna.
Get lost in the vast network of elegant architecture, gritty side streets, food markets and coffee shops, crumbling historic houses, and defining towers.
If you live locally and give yourself more time than the typical one to two-day trip allows, you'll have the ideal Bologna itinerary and immersion in the city.

2. Travel To Catania
Catania has a strong magnetic pull despite the noise, chaos, and scruffiness that greets visitors at first glance.
This is Sicily at its most youthful, with cool and gritty bars, plenty of energy, and an earthy spirit that starkly contrasts Palermo's aristocratic airs.
Catania's historic center is a Unesco World Heritage Site, with black-and-white palazzi towering over sweeping baroque piazzas.
The next thing you know, you're scanning the skyline from a dizzying dome. The next thing you know, you're perusing contemporary art in an 18th-century convent.
The ancient ruins of a town with over 2700 candles on its birthday cake lie beneath it all. Food is another local specialty.
This is where you'll find Sicily's famous pasta alla Norma and the incredible La Pescheria market.

3. Travel To Florence
This small town in the Tuscan hills casts a long shadow through history. Firenze (or Florence), the birthplace of the Renaissance, housed the powerful Medici family and inspired artists such as Michelangelo (David) and Brunelleschi (the Duomo).
If it weren't for the fashionable Italians and chic shops that line Via Tornabuoni, you'd think you were in the 14th century.
But it's not just the Renaissance art that draws people to Florence; it's also the beautiful sunsets, the Italian cuisine, and the romantic atmosphere. Make the most of your time in Florence by taking one of the city's best tours led by a local.

4. Travel To Genoa
The largest seaport in Italy is inextricably contradictory, brimming with grandeur, squalor, sparkling light, and deep shade.
For many visitors today, Genoa is a gateway to the Riviera. Still, its architectural heritage speaks of its former glory – the Most Serene Republic of Genoa ruled over the Mediterranean waves from the 12th to the 13th centuries – and history feels alive in Genoa.
This is especially true in its extensive old city, a frequently confronting reminder of premodern life with its twisting maze of caruggi (narrow streets) still mostly intact.
Blink your way out of this thrillingly dank heart to Via Garibaldi and the magnificent gold-leaf halls of the Unesco-listed Palazzi dei Rolli.

5. Travel To Milano
Of course, it's one of the world's fashion capitals and Milan styles. Visitors scurry between the shops in the Quadrilatero d'Oro, or “Golden Rectangle” – the streets surrounding Via Montenapoleone that house all of the best-known brands.
This city appears to be the most modern in Italy at times. The fashion houses are behind a new wave of contemporary art galleries in repurposed industrial spaces, such as the Fondazione Prada, Armani Silos, and Pirelli Hangarbicocca.
The Triennale hosts a permanent exhibition on Italian design, and the Salone del Mobile, or Milan Design Week, takes over the city every April. Even the nightlife is forward-thinking, with some of Europe's most inventive cocktail bars here.
Of course, Milan has a history as well. The Duomo – the massive wedding cake of Europe's second-largest church – was begun in 1386. (but only completed in 1965, so intricate was the design).
The Brera is one of Italy's most prestigious art galleries, exhibiting works from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
And, of course, this is the city where Leonardo da Vinci worked and painted his famous “Last Supper” in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie.
Past, present, and – in the Porta Garibaldi district – future. Few cities are as stimulating as Milan.

6. Travel To Naples
The third-largest city in Italy is rich in history, art, architecture, and delicious food, but it has a bad reputation for crime and squalor.
While these blemishes are certainly a reality for residents, they are far from universal, especially regarding tourism.
Choose higher ground at places like Certosa e Museo di San Martino, and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views.
Stroll the Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli or chat with the friendly locals to taste this port city's magic.
And, of course, there's nothing like that first bite of Neapolitan pizza (in the city credited with inventing the pizza) or that perfect sip of espresso.
You can't judge a book by its cover, and you certainly can't judge a city by its rough edges – doing so would mean missing out on its true treasures, which include underground frescoes, royal palaces, Tuscan architecture, and so much more.

7. Travel To Palermo
Palermo, for millennia a crossroads of civilizations, offers a heady, heavily spiced mix of Byzantine mosaics, Arabesque domes, and frescoed cupolas.
This city is on the outskirts of Europe and in the heart of the ancient world. Souk-like markets rub shoulders with baroque churches, date palms frame Gothic palaces, and the blue-eyed and fair have bronze-skinned cousins.
A complex metropolis has emerged from centuries of dizzying highs and crushing lows. Crumbling staircases lead to gilded ballrooms, and guarded locals have gold hearts.
Just don't be taken in. Despite its boisterous streets, Sicily's capital is a shy beast, rewarding the curious with citrus-filled cloisters, stucco-laced chapels, and crooked side streets dotted with young artisan studios.
Add Italy's largest opera house and an ever-increasing number of vibrant, new-school eateries and bars, and you might fall in love unexpectedly.

8. Travel To Pisa
Modern Pisa is best known for a disastrous architectural project that once rivalled Genoa and Venice.
However, this captivating city's world-famous Leaning Tower is only one of many notable attractions.
Since the 1400s, education has fueled the local economy, and students from all over Italy compete for spots at its prestigious university.
This gives the town center a vibrant cafe and bar scene, balancing an enviable portfolio of well-maintained Romanesque buildings, Gothic churches, and Renaissance piazzas with a lively street life dominated by locals rather than tourists – a charm you won't find if you limit your visit to Piazza dei Miracoli.

9. Travel To Roma
Rome, the city of seven hills, had a legendary beginning. The Eternal City is said to have been founded by Romulus and Remus, twin brothers who were nursed by a she-wolf and fathered by a war god.
Although historians are skeptical of Rome's epic entrance into the world, most visitors are convinced that there is something magical about the city.
Roma is sure to enchant, whether it's the mystery of nearby Vatican City or the ghosts of the Colosseum, an afternoon caffè on Piazza Navona or a piled-high plate of pasta at a trattoria.
Rome, Italy's capital, is also known for its history, which dates back to Octavian, Julius Caesar, and Hadrian.
Among the historic treasures left behind are the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, and dozens of churches.
The Vatican Museum's treasure trove of art will delight art enthusiasts, and foodies will enjoy the superb Italian fare, not to mention the gelato.
While many visitors are drawn to Rome because of its historical significance, the city is also fast-paced, modern, and relevant, with gleaming designer storefronts, sleek hotels, and cutting-edge restaurants.

Turin's elegant tree-lined boulevards evoke Paris, and its stately art nouveau cafes evoke Vienna, but make no mistake: this sleek, Alp-fringed city is completely self-contained.
The hardworking Torinese created the world's first sellable hard chocolate and Italy's most iconic car, the Fiat.
You should check out its thriving contemporary art, architecture, live music scene, and innovative food and wine culture.

11. Travel To Venice
Venice is magical. Yes, it's fascinating, but once you see the city on the water for yourself, you'll understand.
The breathtaking Grand Canal will greet you when you leave the Santa Lucia train station.
Water taxis will pass beneath the Ponte degli Scalzi (Bridge of the Barefoot), and you may hear the faintest hint of a serenading violin, or is that your imagination?
It's possible that it's not all in your head. Gondolas carrying smitten couples glide through the city's maze of waterways, and gondola drivers are known to sing when the mood strikes.
On land, narrow passageways wind past Old World storefronts and homes and over bridges. You should be aware that maps aren't very useful here, and getting lost is the norm – embrace the confusion or enlist the assistance of a local by signing up for one of the best Venice tours.
The main draw of this canal-lined city is its magical atmosphere, but there are a few other attractions as well.
The St. Mark's Basilica tour guides and the Doge's Palace provide excellent historical context. The Gallerie dell'Accademia displays works by Titian, Veronese, and other famous Venetians. The Teatro La Fenice hosts world-class opera performances.
You can also visit nearby islands such as Lido for the beach, Murano for the famous glass, and Burano for its lace.

12. Travel To Verona
Verona, best known for its Shakespeare connections, attracts a multinational swarm of tourists, most of whom are looking for Romeo and Juliet.
Beyond the heart-shaped kitsch and Renaissance romance, Verona is a bustling city. Its heart is dominated by a massive, remarkably well-preserved 1st-century amphitheatre hosting the city's annual summer opera festival.
Add to that many churches, a couple of architecturally fascinating bridges over the Adige, Veneto hinterland wine and food, and some impressive art.
Verona emerges as one of northern Italy's most appealing cities. And all this is just a short hop from the shores of stunning Lake Garda.
